Nrf2 – BODY'S OWN PROTECTION MECHANISM
Nrf2 is a protein that activates the body's own antioxidative processes and protects the cells from damage and inflammation.
Research is investigating how different substances can stimulate Nrf2 to counteract oxidative stress - a condition that often occurs in injuries and inflammation. Inflammation is characterized by pain, heat, redness, swelling, and impaired function, and is a sign that the body is trying to repair tissue damage.
Nrf2 is found in particularly high levels in the kidneys, muscles, lungs, heart, liver, and brain.
HOW YOU CAN INCREASE Nrf2 NATURALLY:
• Sulforaphane (from broccoli sprouts)
• Glucoraphanin (in broccoli)
• Vitamin D
• Curcumin (turmeric)
• DHA (from krill)
• Anthocyanins (blueberries, lingonberries)
• EGCG (green tea, especially matcha)
• Physical activity
SULFORAPHANE - THE MOST POWERFUL
Sulforaphane from broccoli sprouts is the most effective way to activate Nrf2. Regular raw broccoli often contains too little to have the desired effect - you would need to eat several kilos a day. But broccoli is still healthy and should be included in the diet.
INDIRECT ANTIOXIDANT
Sulforaphane acts as an indirect antioxidant - it strengthens the body's own defenses by increasing detoxifying enzymes (phase 2 detox) and glutathione, the body's most important antioxidant.
Research has shown the following health benefits of glutathione:
• inhibits oxidative stress in the body
• can inhibit inflammation
• anti-aging effect
• can reduce stress and certain types of depression
• can help with infection
• increased amount can have a positive impact on ADHD & autism
• can help against acne
• can help with sleep apnea
• can prevent heart and vascular disease
• can have a positive effect on complications from diabetes
• can in some cases prevent cell death
